INCREDIBLE OPENING FIXTURE SEE'S 1ST XI WIN BY 1 RUN AND TAKE 20 POINTS

A tough away game to start the 2019 campaign was in prospect for a new look younger Scunthorpe Town side which had 4 players making their debuts.

Skipper Karanjit Bansal lost the toss and Scunthorpe were put into bat. Jamie Brumby and one of the debutants Scott Nicolson opened the innings and got off to a solid start. The pair put on 44 before Jamie Brumby was dismissed LBW for 29. Mason Hilldrith was run out a few balls later and Scott Nicolson went lbw for 14 with the score falling from 44/0 to 69/3. This brought together the experienced duo of Karanjit Bansal and Ian Snowden who started to build a solid partnership. The pair put on 86 before Bansal was caught behind for a fantastic 60 off just 51 balls which included 10 boundaries. From 155/3 Scunthorpe collapsed to 178/9 including Ian Snowden being run out for a well-made 35. Darren Quibell (12) and 16 year old debutant Josh Knapton (10 not out) took the score up to 200 which proved to be a crucial partnership.

Defending 200 was going to be a tough ask on a pretty flat wicket and fast outfield, however Danny Cliffe took an early wicket and Ben Brumby provided some excellent bowling early on which got the bowling innings off to a good start. However partnerships built for Woodhall Spa and the game started to get away from Scunthorpe. Woodhall Spa got to 180/3 needing only 21 with plenty of overs remaining. An incredible fight back led by opening bowlers Ben Brumby and Daniel Cliffe saw them fall too 191/9. Cliffe took 3/36 and Brumby 4/26. The drama continued as they got to 199/9 needing only 2 to win the game. Brumby went down mid over with cramp and couldn’t continue. The ball was thrown to 16 year old Mason Hilldrith who took the final wicket to win Scunthorpe the game and finished with figures of 3/41. An incredible game and fight back to produce just a one victory and a big 20 points to start the season.

Scunthorpe’s next game is at Heslam Park this Saturday as they take on Alford starting at 12pm. They also travel to Cleethorpes on Sunday in the Royal London Club Championship. The first time the club will be playing in this competition. 1pm Start.
