A beautiful day at Heslam Park saw Winkworth cup T20 action with Scunthorpe Town, Grimsby and Louth all involved.

The first game was Grimsby taking on hosts Scunthorpe. Grimsby won the toss and batted first and scored 176/5. Harry Warwick starred with the bat for Grimsby scoring 90 off 56 balls. Garmesh Chand produced an excellent spell of bowling with figures of 4-1-13-1. Ben Brumby also chipped in with 2/34. The run chase for Scunthorpe didn’t get off to the best start as they fell to 18/2. Karanjit Bansal kept them in the game and scored a quite brilliant 82 off 48 balls including 6 sixes. He fell with the score on 127 with Scunthorpe still needing 50 in 4 overs. 16 year old Jabari Darrell (35no) and Darren Quibell (17no) then produced a wonderful partnership which almost saw them get over the line finishing 3 runs short. An entertaining game of cricket.

The second game was Scunthorpe vs Louth. Scunthorpe won the toss and chose to bat. After this it was the captain Karanjit Bansal that led the way again smashing 74 in just 30 balls. He hit 7 sixes and 5 fours. Including 4 sixes in one over in which he ended up hitting for 28. To go along with his 82 in the first game he had a superb day and led from the front. Scunthorpe ended on 172/7 in their 20. Louth’s reply never really got going but some blows towards the end of their innings took them to 141 before being bowled out. Garmesh Chand again produced a tight spell of bowling taking 2/20 in his 4 overs and Karanjit Bansal chipped in with 2/22 in his 4 overs and also got a direct hit run out in the field to complete his day.

The final game saw Louth taking on Grimsby. Scunthorpe needing Louth to beat Grimsby to have a chance of qualifying for finals day. A very tight game saw Grimsby requiring 6 to win off the last ball to win and qualify for finals day and Harrison Tice did just that. A really good game of cricket Matt Cliffe earlier held the innings together and made 60.

An excellent day at Heslam Park and for Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club. 2 wins and a loss in their opening 3 games this season proving they belong at this level of cricket. A long season ahead but plenty of positives going forward
